The Diamond Engagement Ring in Styles Both Modern and Classic

The diamond engagement ring has been a symbol of eternal love and affection since the early 1900's. It is a trend that does not seem to be dying out, as every woman craves a diamond engagement ring from her groom-to-be. While in the past there was a single, traditional style that almost all diamond engagement rings took on, today there are several styles that a diamond engagement ring can be. Which one is right for you depends on the style of the wearer and, of course, your budge.

The Classic Single Stone Diamond Engagement Ring: The classic diamond engagement ring is the single stone ring. In the past, a typical diamond engagement ring was a 1 carat diamond on a band of white gold, yellow gold, or platinum. Today, the trend has been towards bigger diamonds. Today's typical single stone diamond engagement ring is more like 3 or 4 carats. The classic cut of a single stone diamond ring is a round brilliant cut diamond. However, the modern diamond engagement ring can be an emerald cut, pear cut or virtually any other that suits the woman that its meant for.

The Three Stone Diamond Engagement Ring: A diamond engagement ring that has three stones is known as a trinity ring. These rings have become very popular recently and many Hollywood celebrities have been given a trinity diamond engagement ring by their significant other. The trinity ring is meant to signify the past, present and future. In a trinity ring, the three diamonds are set in a row on a band of white or yellow gold or platinum. The largest diamond is typically in the middle though it is also possible for all three rings to be the exact same size.

Multiple Stones: A diamond engagement ring can also be a single stone surrounded by several or more smaller stones. The larger stone in the middle is enhanced by the smaller stones, which add sparkle and shine to the ring.

A Wedding Set: Also known as a bridal set, these are a diamond engagement ring and wedding ring that are sold as a set. The two rings are meant to be worn together. Some wedding sets look incomplete when one ring is worn without the other while others just fit together nicely when worn stacked.

Colored Diamonds: Diamonds can come in other colors besides the traditional clear color. Pink, yellow, blue and black tinged diamonds are available for a diamond engagement ring as well. Colored diamonds are sometimes natural and sometimes artificial. Naturally colored diamonds are considered to be very rare and typically cost more than clear diamonds.

Other Stones: Though the diamond engagement ring is the typical choice of engagement ring, they can be made with stones other than diamonds. Some choose to use a sapphire, ruby or emerald as the center stone for an engagement ring and then use smaller diamonds to compliment the ring. While the diamond engagement ring still is the most popular way for lovers to express their love to one another, engagement rings made with a combination of diamonds and other precious gems can be just as beautiful and timeless.
